TOV LIFESTYLE | 77 | planting during a pandemic A R T I C L E It was a combination of the stressful workdays and the uncertain times that lead me to start my garden. By the end of the summer, I had juicy tomatoes, plump eggplants, zucchini, kale, spinach, cucumbers, a variety of chilies to choose from and I picked fresh herbs 2-3 times a day for my meals. It was unbelievable! Part of me couldn't believe that all those amazing vegetables came from my own backyard and with my dedication. It wasn't just about the boredom or a way of filling the time, during the lockdown gardening became a sort of therapy for me. Not only was my body getting a good workout plucking out weeds and dragging bags of soil across my yard but my soul fell in love with watching my little baby seedlings sprout into plants and then produce actual vegetables. Gardening allowed me time to mentally clock out from all the heaviness around me to focus solely on creating something with my hands. My garden bought satisfaction and hope back into my life during such a dark time, while tending plants became part of my daily routine. Coming from a family of farmers, I grew up in Queens plucking pesky weeds from our family garden and watering my grandfather's beloved flower plants. No matter how big or small of a space they had, my extended family grew some sort of fresh peppers, herbs, or even bountiful harvest of squash and pumpkins to share with us in the summer. My uncle would regularly trade a 3 ft. tall Chinese squash for my aunt's Bok Choy. Neighbors would stop by to share some of their spicy peppers with us too! The simple act of sharing a couple of home-grown veggies brought a sense of togetherness and community. My childhood memories inspired me to grow this garden and I'll never look back. Are you looking to grow your own indoor or mini outdoor garden? Here are a few pro tips on how to successfully get your own little garden started. Featured Content by: Melissa Baraf Customer Support
