tŌv lifestYle | 95 | a new hobby a r t i c l e Recharging my Battery life is hectic; people have endless obligations and things have to get done, and yet, no one will disagree that you have to take time for yourself. It's important to recharge your "battery" to clear your mind, and nothing will do this better than a new-found hobby. here's mine. If it gets you thinking about trying something new then I'll consider my job here done. recently, I picked up photography. It was never something I thought I'd find a great interest in. I had never really taken pictures on vacations either. I'd think to myself, "what do i need a photos for? i'd rather live in the moment." A few weeks ago, I was back in jersey helping my parents clean out their garage. My mom handed me a bag and went "You want this?" It contained a ton of camera equipment. "The camera is kind of dated, but the lenses are good!" They were my great uncle jack's cameras. he was an avid traveler and bird watcher/photographer. I figured, why not? I decided to give it a try. When I'd initially opened the bag full of camera equipment I had no idea what I was looking at. A simple Google search, a click or two, and in the matter of minutes I had the manual downloaded and had a basic understanding of how it worked. Easy enough. Not. My very first roll of film developed was actually the second I shot as the first one was botched during loading. I had to find a youTube a video of how to load the film because the tiny pictures in the manual didn't really cut it. Then came in the blurry pictures. But I don't let setbacks get me down, I learn from them. I reminded myself that every great photographer started somewhere. I found, the joy of hobby is the journey. I loved discovering new techniques and soliciting advice from fellow photographers who have been there, done that. A hobby can be many different things which is why they're great. It's all about what you get out of it. Dust off that guitar sitting in the corner, lace up those hiking boots, hit the gym or take a walk with the family. It's easier now more than ever with the amount of information at our fingertips. For me, photography has become part of my everyday carry. If I don't have my camera on me I make lists of places I need to come back too. I love to photograph the neighborhood I grew up in, my current neighborhood in Brooklyn, as well as my commute to the office. I encourage you to pick up something new today.
