"
The pessimist complains about the
wind; the optimist expects it to change; the
realist adjusts the sails." -William Arthur
Ward
For the past decade, the home furnishing
industry has been evolving. As in any
evolutionary process, you will have the
winners, those that become stronger, and
you will have the losers, those that go extinct.
The key to succeeding is to anticipate the
coming changes and to evolve before it's too
late. Adjust your sails, do not try and fight
the wind or wait for it to go away.
This is easier said than done. Many people
fail to see the changes coming even if they
are blatantly obvious. There is a story of
two young fish swimming along when they
happen to meet an older fish swimming in
the opposite direction. The old fish nods
at them and says "morning boys how's the
water?" The two young fish swim on for a bit and then eventually one of them looks
over at the other one and says "what the hell is water?" The most apparent and
important realities are often the ones that are the most difficult for us to see.
At our furniture companies, we pay close attention to the changing course of the
winds experienced in the furniture industry and in consumers buying habits. We
adjust our sails accordingly and enthusiastically embrace the wind.
Along the way, we sail past sunken vessels that were left behind by those that did not
evolve; those that resisted the wind. Maybe they thought their size, brand, or market
share made them impervious? They were wrong. Unfortunately, many more will
experience a similar fate as we continue the journey. However, with hair blowing
in the wind, our sails adjusted, we will speedily proceed to our destination while
continuing to adapt to the changing winds along the way.
Remember, the world rewards those that are courageous enough to stop waiting
and begin. Those people will be the ones to succeed. Be courageous and embrace the
coming changes. Most of all, don't forget to enjoy the ride along the way!
